KICKBOXING SET FOR NORTHERN IRELAND ROADSHOW Ulster’s kickboxing
champions are set to go on tour this winter in aid of charity. Big-name
stars from Prokick will be taking special free teaching seminars
in towns across the province in an effort to increase awareness
of the sport and raise money for good causes. Prokick will be asking
venues to donate the room free of charge and people attending will
give a donation to a charity if the centre’s choice. The aim is
to establish where there is an interest in the sport and set up
permanent classes. Seven champions at various levels from Irish
to World will each be teaching a particular skill during the two-hour
long session. Head of Prokick, Billy Murray, will be taking many
of the classes and will award certificates to those who attend.
People who attend the introduction learn the principles of Prokick’s
style of excellence as well as fitness and flexibility training.
Someone will be available to answer questions afterwards. There
will be sparring sessions which participants can watch but any spectators
will be charged a fee which goes towards charity. Classes will be
held in Newry, Craigavon, Antrim, Cookstown, Londonderry, Strabane,
Dungannon, west Belfast, Carrickfergus and Armagh City. Mr Murray
said he was hoping for a good response from the venture. “This is
an exciting opportunity for all ages to participate in kickboxing,”
he said. “We are the fastest growing sport in the province and are
hoping to expand even further this year. “Kickboxing appeals to
everybody, from families and kids to older people hoping to lose
some weight.” Mr Murray emphasised that all beginner classes are
strictly no contact but said he was always on the look out for the
world champions of the future. “There is so much talent out there
just waiting to be tapped. We have both male and female fighters,
at all ages,” he added. “Indeed, at least half the people who take
our classes are women and we encourage them to come to improve their
self-defence and fitness.” Prokick is looking for a sponsor to back
the tour.
