Tyson Kicking
For Glory
As exclusively revealed two weeks ago in For Kicks, Mike Tyson is
set to make a sensational fight comeback – but his opponent
will not be Lennox Lewis, instead it’s likely to be Kickboxing
man mountain Bob Sapp.
Tyson has just signed terms with the K1 organisation to cross disciplines
into Kickboxing. He signed an agreement in Los Angeles last week.
It is believed a fight with Sapp is now on the cards for sometime
in December in Japan.
Rumours about Tyson moving to kickboxing started two weeks ago.
He was in Las Vegas at the start of August when the K1 roadshow
rolled into the gambling capital. Sapp stood in the ring and challenged
Tyson to a showdown after he had won his own K1 bout.
Many believed the whole thing was simply boxing showmanship in order
to raise interest in the inevitable encounter. Tyson is millions
of dollars in debt and is obviously feels that kickboxing is the
way to claw back some of that money.
That's
my Son-y
After mixing with the heavyweights in Las Vegas last month, the
ProKick team have drawn in a new set of fans.
Pop Idol's Dr. Fox, Fame Academy's Sinead Quinn, the Sunday People's
Colin Murray and rising pop names Abs and Audio Bullys were amongst
the stars who gathered to watch the ProKick team in action in London's
Earl's Court last week.
A team of five ProKickers were chosen to put on Kickboxing exhibition
bouts at the Sony Playstation games conference at Earl’s Court
in London.
“We were there to show the sorts of moves that influenced
The Matrix and Lara Croft,” head coach Billy Murray said.
ProKick was chosen ahead of dozens of gyms throughout Europe. We
thought we would be concentrating on kickboxing the entire time,
but we were swamped by celebrities. They all wanted to come along
and see us in action. “Sinead Quinn was quite taken by Kickboxing,”
he said. “She told me she was interested in getting involved.
She’s also keen to come along to our event in the Ulster Hall
on September 19. ”
Larne man Wilson
Snoddy is in the best form of his life as he gears up for the King
Of The Welterweights encounter at the Ulster Hall on September 19.
He took a bronze medal at the World Amateur Championships in Antwerp
last week, and though disappointed he couldn't repeat the gold winning
success of a year earlier, still feels it was great preparation
for the September show-down.
"I'm still the man to beat in Belfast," he said. "I'm
feeling fit and hungry. I didn't take the gold in Antwerp but I'm
going to take that winner's cheque at the Ulster Hall. I fear no-one."
Rumours are growing that
the sports editor of a well known Sunday newspaper is about to accept
the challenge thrown down by comedian John McBlain and step into
the ring for a celebrity kickboxing fight.
There are no details of the time or place of the confrontation,
but ForKicks understands that the pair will come nose-to-nose for
a pre-fight meeting at the September 19 Ulster Hall event.
Wedding fever
has gripped the Irish Kickboxing family this week.
First, Adrian Murphy, a green belt at the east Belfast ProKick HQ,
married his fiancée Ursula McCabe yesterday (September 6).
In Galway, Pete Foley, chief instructor with the Black Dragon Kickboxing
club married sweetheart Clauda Dougan on Friday (September 5).
And on September 19, Bangor’s senior instructor Diane Harvey
ties the knot. She denies that the reception will be held at the
Ulster Hall, though ForKicks invites you all. Doors at 7.30pm.
Rumour has it that World Champion Gary Hamilton and longtime fiancee
are set to follow suit.
Tickets for
the September 19 KickBoxing 'King of the welterweights' are disappearing
fast. All £10 tickets for the event have now gone and anyone
keen to see Belfast man Gary Hamilton take on England's Dave Newcombe
to unify the World Featherwight titles should get their tickets
soon.
"Demand for this event exceeds every other one we have ever
had," said promoter Billy Murray. "Kickboxing is such
a growing sport that we could fill two Ulster Halls. It's not just
the Hamilton fight, but also the huge undercard that is stirring
interest. Anyone who wants a ticket (£12.50 - £25 for
ringside) should ring the Ulster Hall 02890 323900, ProKick 028
