Back
to the hilton Hotel for more Championship action
A team
of four kickboxers from north & south of Ireland travelled with
to motherwell, Scotland on Saturday.
Belfast
Kickboxing ace Gary Hamilton was back in action at the weekend
one week on from his disappointment which saw the late withdrawal
of his Intercontinental title challenger Abdou Touil at the Ulster
Hall. Hamilton made the trip to Strathclyde Scotland with coach
Billy Murray where he did a hard demonstration with Scotland's Dave
Hill in a catch-weight contest over four rounds. Both fighter put
on a fine performance for the Scottish crowd, and with all demo
contests it was declared a draw.
Topping
the bill on Saturday night was
Galway's European Champion Owen Flatley and the British champion
Chris Carslaw of Paisley Scotland who battled it out over seven
rounds to find the new WKN Welterweight Pro/am champion. From the
start to Finnish, it was a bout very much worthy of a World Championship,
with superb technique from the Scot and the grit and determination
of Flatley producing some exceptional action. After the seven rounds
were up, the judges came to a unanimous decision in favour of the
Scot Chris Carslaw, whom had undoubtedly shown the better technique
and penetrated the defenses of Flatley on a number of occasions,
but take nothing away from Flatley he was very tough.
John
Paul Somes of Kilkenny who beat Newtownards Paul Day a week
a go for the All Ireland Championship, continued his fine form on
Saturday, this time against the European Champion Zander Patterson
of Motherwell. Patterson Started well winning the first round but
John Paul came through strongly with some strong shots which appeared
to unsettle Patterson. Unfortunately Patterson then began to spoil
the bout by holding pushing and even kicking the Irish man when
he was on the ground all of which are violations of the rules. However,
all credit to John Paul Somes who was too strong and won the European
title one week after his Irish title victory in Belfast.
Teammate
Vinny Di Ruso who also picked up and Irish title in the Ulster
Hall on October, 5th with a stoppage win over Newtownabbey's Jeff
McKeen, was in KO form once again when he stormed to a second round
stoppage against the former British champion Alan Thomas of Aberdeen.
Pro
fighter Paul Cummins of Kilkenny beat British Champion Ian Mitchenson
of Edinburgh on points after a grueling bout which went the distance
of five rounds. Cummins piled the pressure on in the third round
forcing a standing count, but was unable to finish the tough Scot,
. Cummins took the decision on points after a hard contest all credit
to both fighters. Mitchenson later went to Hospital for a precautionary
check-up, thankfully all was well.
Douglas Morrison showed that he was still in contention for
bigger things after defeating formar British champion over four
rounds. White was forced to take a standing count in the first round
when he took some heavy shots from the Aberdeen man. however, White
done well to stay in the fight to the end after a rockey early start
to the contest.
