Alan Kilpatrick Belfast winner points Vs  Dave Hastie ( Scotland)

Belfast boy Alan Kilpatrick kicked his way to glory in his home town last night, picking up an Amateur European Title.

Upwards of 800 fight fans crammed into the Park Avenue hotel to see 10 bouts aimed at finding new stars to take the sport forward in Ireland.

Kilpatrick brought the house down with an emphatic points victory at the super Bantamweight level, the 18 year old showing superb style and skill as he out-boxed and kicked his gutsy Scottish opponent Dave Hastie.

The bout went the full five round, with Kilpatrick’s win never in doubt. One would imagine that, as the boy becomes a man, he’ll develop that extra strength to bring bouts like this is a quicker conclusion.

Several times Hastie looked like biting the dust, but the local boy failed to connect with the finishing blows. However, he left the ring deservedly sporting his first ever amateur belt, which he will defend outside of Britain before the year is out.

Belfast’s World Amateur Champion Gary Hamilton made his professional debut on the card when he met hard man Gerry O'Brien from Cork in an all Celt affair.

You could see from the start that Hamilton was in a whole new ball game, although he seemed to win the first three rounds before being pegged back by O’Brien.

It was one of those decision that should have went to Hamilton, but was close enough to put the element of doubt into the Northern Irish corner. However, he won through and now aims to move up the professional ladder.

Galway’s Rory Burke was defending his title he won at the Waterfront hall last March. He put his Intercontinental crown up against - Alexi Andre (France),  The Irish man just was not on form this time out - he was knocked down in the 3rd put managed to a brave finish, Burke lost on points.

Scotland’s Stuart McGowan was floored by Russian born Max Pavlenko in the first round of his WKN intercontinental bout, before unleashing a three round barrage of kicks and punches that totally outclassed his fancied challenger.

Newtownard’s Paul Day couldn’t add to home glory when he lost the WKN Irish title to Dublin’s Owen Flatley, who’s fancy footwork put his namesake Michael to shame.
